One year ago, on February 23, Guatemalan authorities arrested the former head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity, Virginia Laparra. As one of six arrested in a single week, Virginia was targeted by the Public Ministry (MP) for her work against corruption and impunity in Guatemala. Despite international condemnation, Guatemalan courts forced Laparra to await her trial from prison, where she spent the last year of her life in conditions classified as psychological torture. Over 365 days later, Virginia's well-being has plummeted; she needs emergency medical attention. Guatemalan authorities, however, are denying her timely and adequate medical attention. A surgery she desperately needs has been scheduled for the month of May, inexplicably, with no fixed date in that month given.
