MORE THAN 30 ARRESTS AND ATTACKS ON GUATEMALAN JUDGES, LAWYERS AND PROSECUTORS
JUSTICE IN THE GENOCIDE CASES IS IN PERIL
PLEASE CALL THE GUATEMALAN EMBASSY AND PROTEST THIS TRAVESTY
PLEASE TELEPHONE the Guatemalan Embassy, (202) 745-4953, and tell Guatemalan officials that—
1.) Yes, there was genocide in Guatemala, 2.) You are horrified by the ongoing attacks on judges and lawyers involved in those prosecutions, and 3.) If the government does not want justice for genocide, then for you, the coffee produced by the oligarchy has lost its flavor.
NOTE: Please speak respectfully and concisely. DO NOT THREATEN a boycott. A boycott requires very
careful coordinating with many sectors and we are not at that stage yet. But it is important to remind
the Guatemalan government that if it wants the benefits of international relations, then it must respect
the basic human rights requirements.
If the telephone lines are busy, please try again or leave a recorded message. Actual in-person
communications carry a lot of clout. Please get your friends to call too, starting ASAP. Please send us
feedback about the Embassy reaction.
Sample script:
Hello, I’m extremely concerned about the arrest and spurious prosecution of attorney Orlando Lopez,
the continuing detention of Virginia Laparra, the forced exile of judge Miguel Angel Galvez and so many
others working for justice. Forcing judges out of the country and arresting lawyers working for justice
cannot obscure the facts: there was a genocide in Guatemala. If the Guatemalan government persists in
denying the survivors of that genocide the right to justice, then enjoying coffee produced by
Guatemala’s oligarchy, which set the conditions for the war, supported the genocide, and continues to
support the unjust and repressive policies of your government, will become impossible for me. I want to
support the beautiful country of Guatemala but I cannot become complicit in the denial of rights. Please
change course now.
If you prefer a shorter script:
Hello, I wanted to speak to you about the genocide in Guatemala. I’m horrified by the ongoing attacks
on judges and lawyers involved in the genocide prosecutions. Coffee produced by the oligarchy in your
country has become a symbol of all that bloodshed and of all the ongoing injustice. Instead of drinking
Guatemalan coffee and remembering (or imagining) the beauty of Guatemala, I imagine the pain of the
victims. I ask you to immediately begin respecting human rights, including the right to justice.
